The Environmental Action Community (EAC) of Western North Carolina is hosting a “Haywood Hike-a-thon Challenge 2026: All Levels” fundraiser Oct. 3-4.
This first-of-its-kind event seeks to inspire locals and visitors to explore some of the many incredible trails in Haywood County, from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Mountains to Sea Trail, and the Pisgah National Forest. Hikers will register as individuals or form a team, gather pledges, and plan their own hike(s) within the weekend timeframe. They can also compete with other hikers for prizes such as oldest/youngest hiker, most miles hiked, largest group, highest pledge earners, most creative attire, and more.
Guided hikes of three different levels (including an all-inclusive, disabled-friendly hike) will also be offered that weekend to encourage new hikers to join the fun. All levels, abilities, and ages welcome.
The challenge will also seek to establish a record for the most hikers on Haywood trails for one event.
The Hike-a-thon launch will be at 9 a.m. on Oct. 3 at Grassy Ridge Mine Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the closing celebration and awards presentation will be at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 4 at Frog Level Brewing in Waynesville.
EAC is a local 501c3 nonprofit whose goal is to make Haywood the Greenest County in North Carolina. All proceeds from the fundraiser directly support its programs.
