The Haywood County Extension Office is presenting a free class on “square-foot gardening,” a simple, versatile system that takes up less space and requires less work and water to cultivate. 

Lake Junaluska’s yearly plant sale is May 4.

For sale will be a few thousand plants, including an assortment of annuals, perennials, herbs and vegetables, and several varieties of native plants from the Corneille Bryan Native Garden, said Melissa Tinsley, Lake Junaluska director of grounds.

Wildcat Ridge Farm is welcoming visitors throughout May to enjoy the peonies in bloom. 

Experts are using the spring weather to remind people to test their soil if that has not been done in the last two to three years.

The annual native perennial plant sale sponsored by the NC State Extension Master Gardener volunteers has been extended. 

Learn how to grow plants from seed with a program slated for 9:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, at the Haywood County Cooperative Extension Center in Waynesville. 

Prepare for gardening season with “Learn to Grow: Vegetable Gardening,” a workshop offered 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, in Waynesville. 

Learn how to give your fruit trees some love with a workshop starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at Winding Stair Nursery in Franklin. 

Tickets for 2024 Visitors Days at the Southern Highlands Reserve in Lake Toxaway go on sale Thursday, Feb. 1.

It’s not yet time to plant for spring, but Haywood County Master Gardeners are still available to answer questions about all manner of plant-related issues.
