White rice is a good source of carbohydrates and a handy and versatile grain to keep on hand as it stores well.

Here are 5 things you can do with white rice:

  1. Beans and Rice — Cook rice, add in canned, drained black beans and cilantro and top with salsa.

  2. Fried rice — Use cooked rice and add in beaten egg, vegetables and a source of protein (tofu, tempeh, chicken, beef, shrimp) to make into fried rice.

  3. Use leftover cooked rice to make rice pudding by cooking with milk, butter, vanilla, sugar and egg and adding in raisins or dried cranberries for a pop of flavor.

  4. Rice and Fish Balls — If you have cooked rice and leftover fish like salmon, cod, trout or tilapia, mix together, add in a beaten egg to help form balls and spices/seasoning. Roll in breadcrumbs and brown in hot oil.

  5. Mango sticky rice — Cook rice with sugar and coconut milk and serve with slices of ripe peeled mango.
