Haywood Waterways is seeking volunteers for its annual Big Sweep cleanup event on Sept. 12.
Big Sweep is an annual county-wide cleanup event that removes tons of trash from local waterways and roadways. Volunteers should be prepared to work in the sun, get a little dirty and possibly wet. Please wear closed-toed shoes, long pants and bring plenty of water. Trash bags, grabbers and gloves will be provided.
There are four locations for stream and roadside cleanups:
- Pigeon River and around downtown Canton: 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Meet at Cold Mountain Tubing. Mountain Free shuttles around town or upstream will be provided to get volunteers started on the cleanup float. Tubes, kayaks and canoes will be provided free of charge on a first come basis.
- Town of Maggie Valley: 9-10:30 a.m. Meet at the town hall.
- Town of Clyde: meet at the town hall (8437 Carolina Blvd., Clyde) at 9:00 am. Cleanup is about an hour and a half.
- Allens Creek/Petsmart area: Bleu Jay’s Guide to Living Far Out is hosting a cleanup on Allens Creek. Meet at 10:00 am in the far end of the PetSmart parking lot (321 Town Center Loop, Waynesville). Cleanup time is about an hour and a half.
