The Carolina Mountain Club (CMC) is launching its most ambitious fundraiser yet to support critical infrastructure improvements and add restrooms at Max Patch, a beloved Appalachian Trail landmark. The fundraising drive kicks off with a Max Patch Potty Party from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13, at the Brewhouse at New Belgium Brewing in Asheville.

Because overuse damaged Max Patch’s wildlife habitat, federal officials closed the area to camping in 2021, which helped restore the mountain bald. CMC members, partnering with staff from the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, have helped federal land managers replant massive amounts of native vegetation since 2017.

While the CMC and partners have made progress on Max Patch itself, severe parking congestion — with cars sometimes lined up a mile down the road — and an absence of restroom facilities are still issues.

The Max Patch campaign is the largest such undertaking in the CMC’s 103-year history. Everyone who loves Max Patch and the Appalachian Trail can help make it a success.

Funds will pave and stripe the existing parking lot, build a screened 27-space expansion, and install a two-seat vault toilet, trash cans, and picnic tables. Total costs could exceed $1 million, funded by grants and donations.

The Max Patch Potty Party promises a fun evening of community and entertainment in support of these vital upgrades. The event will feature live music by Daniel Shearin of River Whyless and a performance of “A.T.: The Musical” by Appalachian Trail hiker Skip Fredericksen. Guests can also participate in a silent auction and hear updates on the ongoing work at Max Patch.
