The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission urges residents to secure food sources and other attractants as black bears become more active in late summer and fall. Unsecured garbage, birdseed, and pet food can draw bears into neighborhoods, increasing the risk of human-bear encounters.
To help keep people and bears safe, the agency recommends:
- Secure anything that might attract bears.
- Stay alert when driving or walking at night.
- Check yards before letting pets outside.
- Learn how to respond to a bear encounter.
- Share BearWise safety tips with neighbors.
For questions or to report a bear incident, call the N.C. Wildlife Helpline at 866.318.2401, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., or contact a local district wildlife biologist.
