The Town of Sylva, Jackson County Parks and Recreation Department and Jackson County Chamber of Commerce are proud to present the 16th season of the annual “Concerts on the Creek” music series.

An acclaimed Americana/bluegrass outfit, the Darren Nicholson Band will hit the stage at 7 p.m. Friday, June 26, at Bridge Park in downtown Sylva. 

A rising Americana/bluegrass act, the Asheville Mountain Boys will perform at 10 p.m. Friday, June 12, at Bread Heads Tiki Shack in Sylva.

A super-group of sorts, the outfit is a well-oiled machine of some of the finest pickers and grinners around in Southern Appalachia. It features John Duncan (banjo/fiddle), Zeb Gambill (mandolin), Jacob Brewer (bass) and Marshall Brown (guitar). 

The annual Front Street Arts & Crafts Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 13, in downtown Dillsboro.  

Dozens of booths lining Front Street will display handmade items from regional artists and crafters.

The following readings will be held at City Lights Bookstore in Sylva.

• Maria E. Lyons will host a reading and signing for her children’s book series, “Angelina The Adventure Cat,” at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 13. Lyons is a storyteller and educator with more than 30 years of experience in faith-based education and the arts. 

Friends of Panthertown invites the public to come out from 5-7 p.m. Friday, June 5, for a fireside chat at the organization’s office in downtown Sylva at 116 Central St.

Participants are welcome to bring their own tools to sharpen or to help Friends of Panthertown sharpen theirs. Meet with other like-minded people in the community, roast marshmallows over a blazing fire. 

When Jackson commissioners on May 5 reviewed a draft document outlining the framework of a new county library board upon departure from Fontana Regional Library system, Commissioner Jenny Lynn Hooper, clad in a Turning Point USA T-shirt, was quick to express her central grievance: “I don’t think [a board member] ought to have a library card.” 

Bitter laughter erupted from the audience. 

In the part of southern Appalachia where I was raised, there were certain things you learned early: how to be polite, how to mind your elders, how to carry yourself in a way that didn’t invite trouble. And then there were the things no one quite said out loud, but you still somehow understood: good girls don’t talk about sex, don’t think about it and certainly don’t have it. 

The popular “Concerts on the Creek” summer music series at Bridge Park in Sylva has once again been nominated for the prestigious USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards in the category of “Best Outdoor Concert Series.”

This national recognition highlights the series’ continued impact as a beloved community event and regional attraction. Voting is now open to the public and runs through 11:59 a.m. Monday, May 11. 

As the weather gets nicer and spring slowly transitions to those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer, a bevy of longtime and beloved festivals start to pop up in the picturesque mountain communities here in Western North Carolina. 

These annual gatherings are a way to bring all of us together after an extended period of hunkering down during the winter months. Filled with locals and visitors alike, all those present partake in numerous activities and avenues to support those in your town.

Harris Regional Hospital will partner with Jackson County Public Schools to host its annual free sports physical event at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 30, in the Smoky Mountain High School gym in Sylva.
