Larry Korhnak’s photography will be on display in the Macon County Library Meeting Room throughout the month of October. He enjoys waterfall photography for the experience and adventure, so at 6 p.m. on Oct. 8 at the library, he’ll share some of his knowledge of resources, safety, lighting, equipment and creativity.

Franklin hosts lecture on history of Cowee School
On Monday, July 21, the series “Where We Live: History, Nature and Culture,” will present a program on the history of Cowee School, now the Cowee School Arts and Heritage Center. Speakers will be Bill Dyar, long-time principal of the school; Stacy Guffey, founding director of the Arts and Heritage Center; and Laura Brooks, current director.
Volunteers beautify Franklin’s Women’s History Park
On June 26, the Folk Heritage Association/Women’s History Trail completed the final stages to beautify the town’s Women’s History Park.
In March 2024, FHAMC and the Town of Franklin opened the park.
Medicine for living: Alexa Rose plays Yonder Community Market
On Sunday afternoon, as a good portion of Western North Carolina was experiencing rainstorms, the early summer sunshine broke through the clouds at Yonder Community Market in Franklin. Soon, the rays of light cascaded through the large oak trees while acclaimed singer-songwriter Alexa Rose performed.

At this point, I would like to tell you about my great-great grandfather, Bryant Carden, who joined the Confederacy. Bryant was known for writing wonderful letters in calligraphy, and the illustration below, of a bird in flight, is an example.

No tax increase proposed for Macon
Macon County’s proposed Fiscal Year 2025-26 budget maintains the current tax rate, even as county revenues are projected to increase slightly.
“Revenues are slightly higher due to an increase in the taxable value of properties,” said County Manager Warren Cabe in his first ever budget presentation to county commissioners.
