Correction: An earlier version of this story mistakenly reported the sales tax referendum passed in Macon County. The story has been updated to reflect the correct information.

Macon County voters have spoken; the quarter-penny sales tax referendum has failed by a razor-sharp nine-vote margin for the third time. Additionally, first-time Republican candidates Kellie McConnel Burns and Dylan Castle, along with incumbent Republican John Shearl, have secured spots on the Macon Board of Commissioners.

Shearl beat Democrat Russ Lunn 54.61% to 45.39% in the District 1 race.

Burns came out on top of the District 2 race with 29.3% of the vote, with Castle close behind at 28.93%.

Democratic Candidats Terry Bell and Janet Jacobs Green trailed behind with 22.39% and 19.37% of the vote, respectively.
