Jackson inmate found unresponsive

A Jackson County Detention Center inmate is currently at Mission Hospital in Asheville after having been found unresponsive.

Melissa Middleton Rice, 49, was arrested Jan. 16 on 15 counts, including domestic criminal trespass, simple assault, larceny of a motor vehicle, resisting a public officer, breaking and entering, assault of a government official, burning personal property and protective order violation. She was admitted to the detention center at 1:32 p.m. and found unresponsive later that same day.

Detention staff provided medical attention while waiting for Harris Regional Hospital EMS and Sylva first responders to arrive.

Sheriff Chip Hall has requested that the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation look into the incident.
