Bomb threat made to Jackson, Swain and EBCI government buildings
A bomb threat was called into 911 during the 11 a.m. hour this morning, with a male voice claiming bombs had been planted at the Jackson County, Swain County and Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians justice centers, Jackson County Manager Chuck Wooten said.
All three buildings are closed until bomb dogs can sweep the premises to ensure safety. The Jackson County Library, which is often referred to as "the old courthouse," is also closed in the event that the threat was meant to refer to it as well.
The 911 call did not give indication of a motive, Wooten, and no bomb presence has been confirmed. As far as the Jackson Justice Center is concerned, it is unlikely a bomb would have made its way inside the building due to the new single-point-of-entry system, Wooten said, but it’s possible someone could hide a bomb outside the building.
Bomb sweeps are expected to be complete in time for the start of business Friday.
A 3 p.m. work session and 6 p.m. meeting of the Jackson County Commissioners that had been scheduled for today at the justice center will be held at the Heritage Room of the Jackson County Department on Aging instead.
