Bird-banders wanted
Volunteers are needed for a summer monitoring project involving up-close contact with birds.
The bird-banding project will monitor two young forest habitats along the Little Tennessee: Cowee Mound on the Qualla Boundary and Welch Farm near Marble. It is a partnership of the Land Trust for the Little Tennessee, Southern Appalachian Raptor Research and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
The sampling, with dates scheduled throughout the summer, starts at dawn and ends at noon, with help needed in all aspects of the survey work. No experience necessary.
Planned dates change often due to weather, so check the calendar at www.bigbaldbanding.org/calendar/ for the latest dates before heading over. Bird banding days are labeled with the acronym MAPS, with COWE signifying the Cowee Mound, BB meaning Big Bald, Welch meaning Welch Farm and TESS meaning Tessentee.
