Smokies home to rare synchronized lightning bugs
Spots are going fast to view the unique synchronous firefly display in the Elkmont area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park June 4-11. Every year, thousands of visitors gather to watch the synchronized flashing of Photinus carolinus, a firefly species that puts on a natural light show. Parking passes are required to attend.
Reservations cost $1.50 each and cover a maximum of six people per vehicle. Shuttle buses will transport people from the designated parking area to the viewing area beginning at 7 p.m., for an additional $1 per person. A small number of passes will be held until the day before the event.
