Haywood Community College, in partnership with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, is hosting the National Hunting & Fishing Day event on its campus to celebrate our national conservation heritage. Now in its 53rd year, this nationally recognized day is the largest and most effective grassroots movement ever undertaken to promote outdoor sports and conservation.
The John G. Palmer Intercollegiate Woodsmen’s Meet will also occur on this same day. The confluence of these events celebrates the outdoors, conservation, and collegiate lumberjack competitions.
The Hunting and Fishing Day includes free, interactive activities for families and youth of all ages. Featuring many community partners sharing information to the community about their services, they will share how they support our regional ecology and community spirit.
Specialty activities are scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will include interactive demonstrations, archery, fish printing crafts, and the ability to build a fishing pole and fish on campus. Community partners on campus include Balsam Mountain Trust Nature Center, BearWise, Haywood Waterways, the National Wild Turkey Federation, and many more.
The John G. Palmer Intercollegiate Meet will start at 8 a.m., concluding at 5 p.m. This competition will feature over 10 colleges and universities from this region testing their skills in multiple competitions such as water boil, pole fell, crosscut, and pole climb. These are timed activities with the public able to view and cheer on their favorite team. Event visitors can experience these competitions and special events throughout the day.
