Recently I asked a question on my social media channels:
“What is a nutrition “rule” you grew up with, but now question – or maybe even realize was flawed and now you know better?”
Old rule – ‘Low fat and fat-free ice cream, cookies and cakes are good for you!’
Reality – We’ve realized when food makers take something out of something sweet like those cookies, cake or ice cream, they will often have to compensate by adding something in to satisfy our tastebuds. In the case of a sweet item or dessert, that’s often sugar. That meant that many of the “fat free” and “low-fat” items were higher in sugar and could end up having as many or more calories than the counterpart that had a regular amount of fat.
