What Balkcom brings to 11th District race

Republicans in Western North Carolina had five days to do what normally takes months: replace a congressional nominee, assess a rapidly changing field and choose someone capable of immediately entering a general election campaign.

They chose State Rep. Jennifer Balkcom.

The more important question now is not how she won a Republican committee vote, but what her selection offers voters and what her record says about her ability to meet the unusually broad demands of representing Western North Carolina at this moment.

For Republican voters, the first test is whether Balkcom can credibly defend the conservative agenda and the priorities that animate President Donald Trump’s coalition. For the broader electorate, the second is whether she has the experience, judgment and governing ability to deliver practical results for communities still confronting unfinished Helene recovery, infrastructure needs and persistent economic challenges.
