Haywood School Board fills budget gap left by county commission

The Haywood County School Board on July 21 addressed two important items during a meeting that lasted less than 10 minutes.

Members were gridlocked after voting 4-4 on the proposal to devote $725,000 from the Haywood County Schools general fund to the HCS 2026-2027 budget, an unusual situation for a board that typically votes unanimously for or against items. Chairman Chuck Francis, the tiebreaker, decided in favor of balance withdrawal.

Republican Haywood County Commissioner David Burnette made an impassioned plea for the measure.
