MLK Day Events
• Western Carolina University’s Martin Luther King Jr. weeklong celebration will be highlighted this year with speaker Charisse Burden-Stelly’s keynote address “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Tradition of Radical Blackness.” Find a full list of events here.
• The Jackson County NC NAACP Branch #54AB will lead a Freedom Caravan from Sylva to Western Carolina University on Monday, Jan. 17, to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Vehicles will line up at 9:15 a.m. at Mark Watson Park, 86 Mark Watson Park, Sylva and be escorted to reserved parking at Western Carolina University (WCU), 1 University Way, Cullowhee. Caravan riders will join the annual MLK Unity March, beginning at 11 a.m. at the fountain in the center of campus. • WNCC Martin Luther King, Jr Commemoration “Infinite Hope: Honoring the Legacy - Advancing the Vision - Fulfilling the Vision of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15. Learn more and find streaming options HERE.
• The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Asheville and Buncombe county is dedicated to preserving and advancing the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The format for the 2022 Celebration will be different this year due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. As the group commemorates 41 years of service and celebrations, it will move most of the programming, including the Peace March & Rally, to online platforms utilizing YouTube and Zoom. • Hood Huggers International, Riverlink, Asheville Parks & Recreation, Asheville Creative Arts, Energy Savers Network and Burton Street Community Association are joining on this day of service to facilitate engagement in community betterment projects in the Burton Street neighborhood and Asheville on January 17, 2022. The organizations have identified projects of need in the neighborhood intended to support unity and sustainability within the community. Find more information, or register HERE.
• UNC Asheville’s annual commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. for 2022 will feature a keynote address by New York Times bestselling author and Chair of Princeton’s Department of African American Studies, Eddie Glaude Jr., on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2022.
