Sponsored: Diet after diabetes
My husband is newly diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and I don't know where to start as far as what foods he should eat or what I should be looking at on food labels...can you help?
Ask your husband's physician about a referral to diabetes education classes. These should be available either individually or with a group or he can be referred to a Registered Dietitian or a Certified Diabetes Educator. Your local hospital or health department may also offer diabetes education classes to the community. If your husband is a veteran you may also want to check with the VA. These classes and instruction will help the both of you learn more about meal planning and carbohydrates counting along with medication and exercise to manage blood sugar. A good resource for meal planning and recipe guides on-line is the American Diabetes Association (www.diabetes.org). You will be looking at the portion size and the amount of carbohydrates per serving/portion. Limiting or avoiding foods and beverages with added sugars that are high in carbohydrates is the first step for many.
