This president is an embarrassment

Irrespective of your political position or party, all aware Americans should have been embarrassed by President Trump’s performance at the United Nations. For nearly an hour he presented clearly refutable lie after lie interspersed with petty peevish complaints.

As residents of Jackson County continue to rail against commissioners’ June vote to withdraw from the Fontana Regional Library system over LGBTQ content — a decision made without a plan, without a clear understanding of library operations and without reliable financial projections — questions are growing more pointed, but the minority that supports withdrawal continues to spread misinformation about key aspects of library operations.

We were active members at First Baptist Church; our five children attended Fairview Elementary and Sylva-Webster High School. My wife, Barbara, taught piano, dulcimer, guitar and other instruments to dozens of people throughout Western North Carolina. We Osments will always consider Sylva to be our hometown.

Lately there have been video ads on YouTube and TV that say “Biden Raided and Broke Medicare,” that Biden raised the price of pills for seniors. This is beyond the scope of “misinformation,” it is a barefaced lie of the absolute worst kind.
A lesson in how lies lead to dangerous outcomes
Facts, once unassailable, have become, well, difficult to quantify. People make up or repeat lies, especially on social media platforms and other online spaces, and people believe them, think what they read or hear is true, is a fact. As it turns out, those lies can be dangerous. We’ve all witnessed it at the national level, but it’s also happening right here in Western North Carolina.
