FRL director is a devoted librarian

To the Editor:

I am a former employee of Tracy Fitzmaurice and I'm writing in support of her work as director of the Fontana Regional Library and Librarian of Jackson County Public Library.

Jackson residents blast library exit, demand explanation

Public frustration boiled over at the July 1 Jackson County Board of Commissioners meeting, where speaker after speaker condemned the board’s recent decision to withdraw from the Fontana Regional Library system, urged reconsideration and asked for a public statement from commissioners.

Forest Hills fights back: Village cancels planning contract with county over FRL withdrawal

In a move that evokes imagery from the biblical battle between David and Goliath, the tiny Jackson County municipality of Forest Hills is fighting back against county commissioners for their vote to withdraw from the Fontana Regional Library system late last month.

Thoughts on Jackson and the FRL issue

To the Editor:

I have just finished reviewing the comments and commissioner discussion from the June 3 Jackson commissioner meeting in regard to leaving the Fontana Regional Library system. I want to thank Mr. Letson for the position he stated. It is one that I agree with.

Libraries shouldn’t choose ideologies

To the Editor:

As I read the article about “Jexit,” I found myself wondering about the word “ideology.” In the article, proponents of taking the Jackson Country libraries out of the Fontana Regional Library system frequently used the term.

Face to face: Jackson County meets Fontana board amid library controversy

Finally face to face amid a simmering standoff over library governance and subjectively inappropriate material in a regional library system that’s served locals for more than 80 years, Jackson County commissioners spent nearly three hours in a joint meeting with the Fontana Regional Library Board of Trustees on June 19 learning just how much they don’t know about running a library.

Jackson commissioners delay budget adoption

Faced with a mounting backlog of infrastructure needs, Jackson County commissioners have failed to agree on a basic annual budget yet continue to insist they can accurately forecast the added costs to taxpayers of withdrawing from the Fontana Regional Library system.

Leaving FRL just doesn’t make sense

Citizens and constituents of Sylva, I’d like to offer you an apology. In fact, I owe you two.

All Sylva residents are also Jackson County constituents — Sylva is the county seat, and county-level decisions affect us directly. The Jackson County Public Library is a clear example.

Common sense needed in library debate

I have supported libraries in WNC for over 12 years and been a lifelong library patron. I support all viewpoints being equally represented on shelves providing that librarian gatekeepers allow true balance. However, I do not support or trust an unaccountable bureaucracy with its thumb on the scales of public opinion that entangles three different counties causing unnecessary conflict.

I will fight over library issue

To the Editor:

I would like to speak in support of a decision from this board to remove from a library system that continues to make decisions that offer and highlight sexually based material, including sexually explicit material, for children.
