Don’t legislate your ‘beliefs’

To the Editor:

According to a couple of newsletters I got, the week of May 14-20 was National Women’s Health Week, urging me to consult with my certified and licensed doctors about screenings and best health practices to keep myself healthy.

I find it very ironic that this was also the week that our state legislature chose to vote to override Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto of the very restrictive and unscientific abortion bill passed by the legislature. I did not realize we had so many certified doctors in our legislature so that they know more about my health needs than I and my certified doctor do.

If I had deep enough money pockets, I would sue those legislators who voted for this bill for practicing medicine without a license. I also think all these anti-abortion bills are a violation of the First Amendment to our Constitution, which states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion ….”

There is no scientific basis or medical standards code that support what is written in most of these laws, so legislators say this is what they believe. To me, that means you can’t legislate your beliefs on me.

  • LA - The idea that life begins at conception is not only not a "scientific fact" as you assert but it isn't even a question science would ask. When human life begins is first and foremost a philosophical or religious question. It is, at times, a legal question.

I hope your pregnancy goes well and I wish you all the best but your blind assertion of scientific fact demonstrates an ignorance of scientific method and the sorts of questions science both asks and seeks to provide evidence for.

Ms. Josephs: Your comments contInually demonstrate a lack Of faith, hope, and charity as 1Corinthinians 13:13 commands. It must be difficult to live with such anger and hate. It might be wise to remember that the judgements you visit upon otjers shall be visited upon you.

  • The assertion that life begins at conception is scientific fact, not a belief. Your position that it is ok to take human life at any stage is a belief, as is believing that killing your own offspring constitutes healthcare. I am a pregnant woman horrified by such beliefs. Grateful for our legislators taking steps to ensure the right to life for all in our state, including those preparing to be born.

  • The legislature has the authority to legislate on the matter of abortion. The silliness about legislating beliefs is funny because you are wanting them to legislate your beliefs.
