Learn how to plan your vegetable garden
People new to vegetable gardening and folks looking for a refresher to hone those skills can learn from a master gardener next week.
Topics covered in the class will include starting a new garden, planning a garden for spring and fall planting, following a garden calendar, improving soil and composting. The class will involve both lectures and hands-on demonstrations.

Voter registration deadline nears
Municipal elections will soon take place across North Carolina, so now is a great time to check your voter registration status and register if necessary by Oct. 10.
Voters have many options for registration — in-person at your county’s board of elections office or the local DMV, alongside online registration with a valid North Carolina driver license.
Jackson County Parks and Rec youth basketball league registration open Sept. 1
This program is available for boys and girls in second to eighth grade.
Register participants with the recreation center where they will be practicing, either Cullowhee or Cashiers.
Adult kickball league begins in Jackson County
Registration has started for an adult kickball league in Jackson County.
Participants must be at least 14 years old to participate. The team fee is $150, and games are played Wednesday nights in Cullowhee starting Aug. 6.
Jackson County opens flag football registration
Registration for youth flag Football clinics and youth flag football league is now open. Registration will remain so until April 28 for the clinic and May 15 for the league.
Haywood GOP convention draws near
The Haywood County Republican Party will hold its annual convention on March 1 at the Historic Haywood Courthouse, 216 N. Main St., in Waynesville. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and closes at 10:45 a.m.
Haywood Waterways announces Polar Plunge
The Plunge is back for its 13th consecutive year. On Saturday, Feb. 8, Haywood Waterways Association (HWA) and Lake Junaluska Assembly are hosting the annual “Plunge Benefit-t-t-ting Kids in the Creek & Environmental Education.”
HCC hosts spring hunter safety courses
Haywood Community College’s Department of Arts, Sciences and Natural Resources and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission will offer two opportunities for hunter safety courses in Spring 2025.
