To the Editor:

Charlie Kirk was another victim of gun violence in this country, just like Melissa and Mark Hortman, and just like the children at Annunciation Catholic School — 8-year-old Fletcher Merkel and 10-year-old Harper Moyski. Once again, thoughts and prayers are sent to the victims’ families, and once again politicians react to the tragedy with accusations and recriminations.  

Swain County Commissioner Chairman Kevin Seagle has announced his resignation, effective Aug. 31. Seagle. 

Ahead of the announcement, Seagle was absent from the board’s Aug. 19 meeting, cited “unfounded accusations” and “personal attacks” in a letter detailing his decision “with a heavy heart but a clear conscience” dated Aug. 15. 

A Prince George’s County, Maryland, man whose viral video of a confrontation with a group at a dump in Haywood County drew outrage and polarized viewers has said he will file a federal civil rights lawsuit against several parties, including Haywood County Sheriff Bill Wilke.

They couldn’t be more different. But it’s not about race, religion or party affiliation. 

Attorney General Josh Stein, a Democrat, and Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson, a Republican, present strikingly different views not only on their priorities if elected governor but also on the 30,000-foot view of what North Carolina is and will be. 

New town leadership is looking forward to getting things moving again in the tiny Graham County municipality of Lake Santeetlah, after a pair of incumbents and a pair of former Town Council members won resounding victories repudiating actions taken by the town’s elected leaders over the past two years.
