County election roundup

Here’s who has filed lately for the upcoming local election. Filing continues through Feb. 29.

Haywood County:

Another Republican has put his foot into the county commissioner race. Tracy Kevin Coward, of Waynesville, will run against two incumbents during this year’s general election.

There are currently two seats on the five-member board up for grabs. Incumbent commissioners Mark Swanger, a Democrat, and Kevin Ensley, a Republican, have both filed to run for re-election.

Jackson County:

Incumbent Mark Jones, a Democrat representing the Cashiers area, has filed for re-election.

There are two seats on the five-member board open. Commissioner Joe Cowan, a Democrat, has decided not to seek election again. Former Commissioner Stacey Buchanan and Vicki Greene have previously filed to run for Cowan’s seat.

Macon County:

Paul Higdon, a Republican building contractor, has filed against incumbent Democrat Bobby Kuppers, who is seeking re-election. Kuppers also faces primary opposition.

There are three seats on the five-member board open. Commissioners Kevin Corbin and Jimmy Tate, both Republicans, are seeking election to win the seats each were appointed to fill.
