Partner content: Bananas & Diabetes
Question: I have diabetes…can I eat bananas?
Answer: Yes, someone with diabetes can eat a banana. Bananas are a good source of potassium and fiber.
The key with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes is understanding which foods and beverages have carbohydrates in your meals and snacks. All foods and beverages with carbohydrates will affect your blood sugar. Knowing how many/much carbohydrates you are eating and can eat at a meal or snack is important and also pairing those carbohydrates with sources of protein and fat like meat, chicken, fish, eggs, cheese, tofu will help balance meals and your blood sugar.
½ a banana has about 15 grams of carbohydrates so one whole banana is about 30 grams. There are fruits that have lower amounts of carbohydrates like melon and berries.
