Time to end the filibuster

Time to end the filibuster

To the Editor:

In November 2020, millions of voters like me went to the polls and cast a ballot for Joe Biden.

Now, with a relentless GOP attack on our voting rights underway, I’m asking President Biden to return the favor. It’s time for Biden to go further than talking about supporting voting rights legislation. We need him to come out and fully support ending the filibuster so the Senate can finally pass voting rights legislation like the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

With the filibuster intact, these bills stand little chance of passing. We need the president to use his power of office to pressure the Senate to end the filibuster and clear a path for voting rights reform.

We can’t out-organize voter suppression. History will remember how President Biden handles these attacks on our right to vote. I’m urging him to do the right thing.

  • Umm since you're bringing up going to the polls. There were also many people that went to the polls to vote that were told that they had already voted. Now how did that happen? Probably because if you're not required an id to vote anyone can pose as the individual. I went to vote myself and was listed as inactive. I know that I should have had to show id to vote, only to be told no need id not required. I immediately said I will not vote unless you look at my id. I do not like the idea that anyone can go to the polls and say that they are me and verify my address and vote. So more or less this isn't about taking anything away from a voter it is to ensure that the person that is voting is verified. It wouldn't be any different than if someone stole your identity leaving you with mountains of debt all because all they had to have was your information. Why this is being called racist is beyond me especially when it comes to something as important as a vote. Unless the general idea here is to not have an id so it's an automatic that anyone can vote for whomever so that the democratic party can win instantly that's the only thing that truly comes to mind and if that's the only way that the Democrats can win then that's just plain dishonest, it has nothing to do with suppression. And as far as the filibuster goes, with looking at this as a tool that's keeping bills from passing this is ideally in place for a reason. It seems as though it's only convenient to toss it when one feels threatened or if certain ones feel that it isn't no longer needed because it's usually in place for the benefit of the minority. So with that said it just confirms one's assurance that the minority would no longer have any rights. That takes us to biting off more than you can chew. Just because the Democrats have the majority now and wish to end the filibuster doesn't mean they will remain the majority and need it eventually in their favor. I'm not saying this to be disrespectful whatsoever however saying that Biden needs to use his power to pressure the Senate. It's more than obvious that he has no power outside of signing his name to what he is being told to do. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out. And if you support all that has happened to this country since Biden became president then I would honestly have to say that you definitely do not love America. It is unbelievable how someone could support Biden after this country has been through so many drastic changes and not one of them benefit American people well unless you're the elete. You're right to vote hasn't changed what you're really asking for is to take away the honesty of what voting is all about.

  • What you are pushing is not anything that will protect anyone's right to vote. It will simply regularlize the fraud we saw last year. Federalizing the elections is unconstitutional and, therefore, illegal.

  • Biden has done a great job!
    Open borders
    Higher gas
    Groceries high
    taxes higher.
    home prices & vehicles higher.
    runaway inflation
How much more until we are all on the governments money?
Hard on a retired person, oh wait we don't count.

  • States that have voter ID laws actually had an increase in voters, mainly with the minority.
Verifying you are who you say us not voter suppression.
Kinda ironic that the progressive left is for vaccine passports, with photo ID to enter restaurants, gyms, salons, theaters, busses.
We need to show photo ID and in many states a permit to exercise our Enumerated Constitutional Right to Keep and Bear Arms. BTW voting is not a Constitutional Right, it only says we can not discriminate against women, people of color and people over 18.

  • This letter to the editor is insane. What blatant stupidity. I can't even begin to refute this written trash. Let me ask you something Jana Williams... When are IDs required? Lets see now... driving, boarding an airplane, purchasing a car, getting a car registration, buying insurance, buying train tickets, obtaining a passport, transacting with a bank, applying for store credit, getting a credit card.... etc.. When is a valid ID not required? Voting.
