Daytime closures resume on Newfound Gap Road

Daytime closures associated with an 8-mile paving project on Newfound Gap Road in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park will resume on Monday, Aug. 16.

Through Sept. 30, single-lane closures and traffic delays will be permitted from 7 a.m. Mondays through noon Fridays, managed with flagging operations and a pilot car. Some parking areas and pulloffs will be closed intermittently. No daytime lane closures will be allowed on weekends, holidays or during the month of October.

The work will take place between the Chimneys Picnic Area and Newfound Gap. It started in March and is expected to wrap up by Nov. 30, though work schedules are subject to revision as needed for inclement weather. It’s funded through an $8.5 million Federal Highway Administration paving contract awarded to Burnsville-based Bryant’s Land Development Industries.

Smokies road updates are posted at www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/temproadclose.htm and SmokiesRoadsNPS on Twitter.
