Stop the checks, get to work

To the Editor:

In response to the article, “Where Are the Workers?” Well, you can thank your President Biden for that.

This crisis is solely on the woke administration’s shoulders. It’s been 16 months of unemployment checks! Plus, the extra $300 per week from the federal government. Stop the checks and stop whispering, “pay them more.”

I thought there was a limit of time on the unemployment checks?

There was a time I was unemployed. The rule then was six months max. And you had to apply for a job at five places per week, and show (on paper) that you had applied, and you were making an effort to secure your livelihood of cashflow and they investigated your claims. After six months they stop the checks.

Presently there are so many jobs to be had. You can almost pick any job you like regardless of your skin color. Nobody is going to turn you away. Nobody ever offered me the incentives that are being offered now: sign-on bonuses, relaxed schedules or even higher pay. No one ever said, “she’s white, let her continue her privilege, you’re hired.” Ha ha.

If your president just keeps giving out all our tax money, to basically lazy people, then they’ll never get off their lounger. It’s the beginning of Marxism, socialism, and then communism (China).

Let’s all just live off the government. They give you money, then dictate how you’ll live. And why not — then you’ll be employed. Got it? Like a boss. You get paid, they tell you what to do.

Have you noticed the bare shelves? Long wait times in every aspect? Sourcing out jobs to other countries?

I called for takeout pizza. The woman who answered the phone was in El Paso. Guess Canton’s people have jobs?

Maybe all those crossing our border have scooped up on our jobs. Or, maybe we’re just too lazy and are all-too-happy to accept free money that we, our children and grandkids will have to pay back.

Taxes are going up, which Biden promised wouldn’t happen (liar, BS). How and where is he getting all this money? Making it in the basement? From China? Social Security? Certainly not welfare.

Get up people. Show some self-respect, take responsibility for your own finances. Stop depending on others. And by all means get a job.

  • Thank you ms subic. Now the govt is paying family's with children a monthly amount. If you can not afford chron do not have them. If you have children get a job. There are plenty of parents holding down 2 jobs to support their family. The taxes if those workers and all others should not be supporting others. How many of the government recipients are illegals???

  • Sorry Ms Woodward - Biden is not OUR President and whoever is behind this administration is pulling his strings anyway. The real results of the election shenanigans will eventually come out and the voice of the American people will prevail. Take a serious look at what is happening to our nation since the election - gasoline took a large jump in price as have many consumer goods and this 'unemployment' situation has about killed small businesses across the country. We had a booming economy and had finally become energy independent. Biden and his ilk are destroying America and folks like you can't seem to see it. Sad.
Our only real hope for our country is 2 Chronicles 7:14 in scripture which states "If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves and pray and turn from their wicked ways, THEN will I hear from heaven, forgive their sins and HEAL THEIR LAND". The Democrat party threw God out some years ago at their national convention. Big mistake! We need Him now more than ever....

  • Wow Nancy, go girl! I seldom read "opinions" in this paper that voice the opinions of common sense people. I agree with you totally and also wonder when people will wake up and speak out against what this president and his socialist staff are doing to our country.

  • Excellent opinion Nancy. I wholeheartedly agree. Not much we can do but wait for the next corrupt election cycle for the good folks in America to attempt to throw the bums out. For those who voted for Biden....sorry, there are no refunds.

  • Amen sister! I voted for Biden and believe in most of his ideas for what's best for our country, however, this unemployment idea is allowing people too much flexibility to sit back and do nothing. Jobs are available everywhere I look for a decent salary including benefits.

Let's fix this problem by going back to 6 months of unemployment "if needed" and then your funding stops. Be an adult, leave your ego at the door concerning what you do for work, and start providing for yourself/family and contribute to your community.

  • we used to believe in capitalism as the best economic system for a government to enrich its people. Now we have folks asking the government to starve folks to make them take any job to support businesses, rather than have businesses use the rules of capitalism to solve their scarcity of workers. Government exists as a means of people to provide benefits for the people. Capitalism is an economic system established and regulated by the government to provide the best means of progression for the people.
If a business is unable to exist without government force, capitalism teaches us that the business should fail. Capitalism also says that if the need for the service exists, someone will step in and fill that void. the government needs to go back to America's original founding beliefs as expressed in the preface to the US Constitution and serve the people rather than maintaining moats, monopolies, and rents to support corporations.

  • Yes, Jean! You are so on point!

Let's get all of the 60 to 75 year olds who decided to retire during the pandemic back to work. We can do it by eliminating their retirement benefits. Let's also get all of the single mom's (and dad's) back to work so they can earn LESS than they are receiving right now on top of paying for childcare services (so, much, much less) because, after all, who wouldn't put themselves in a worse off position than what they currently have? No self-respecting person would negotiate a better deal for themselves if they can help businesses while harming themselves.

As to what happened in your time, I suppose that was during the last global pandemic Jean? My how things have changed.

    Get real woman.

  • In NC, to receive unemployment insurance benefits, you must seek work with at least three potential employers each week and maintain a detailed and verifiable record of your work search. If you cannot prove you looked for work, you may be considered overpaid and required to repay benefits.
