Polar Plunge lands cash for waterway education
Lake Junaluska was only 39 degrees on Jan. 31, but 120 people still braved the cold to participate in Haywood Waterways Association’s Third Annual Polar Plunge.
The event, hosted by Lake Junaluska Assembly, raised $24,500 for youth waterway education. That’s a bit shy of the goal of $25,000, but donations are still coming in. In addition to the 120 plungers, 250 people came to watch.
The money will go to support Kids in the Creek, a hands-on learning experience that educates middle-school students about aquatic ecology and water quality with a hands-on field trip. The program has reached more than 11,000 students since its inception.
