Learn how to keep gardening as temps dip
A workshop on winter gardening and spring garden prep to teach gardeners how to avoid putting growing season to bed in the winter months will be held from 12:30-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Cullowhee Community Garden.
Both out in the open and under cover using low-tunnel hoops, plenty of plants are capable of being cultivated in the winter. The workshop, organized by the Cullowhee Community Garden, will cover methods of growing under covers, how to maximize heat retention in the soil, extending the season for fall crops and getting started early in spring using low-tunnels.
The workshop will also cover how to make for a better spring garden with preparation now. Topics will include soil fertility, pH adjustment, cover crops, green manures, building soil with compost and animal manure and growing a weed-free garden.
Free, with no registration necessary. A limited number of low-tunnel hoops and row covers will be available for sale. Adam Bigelow, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 828.226.0398.
