‘Doctors for Doc’ takes the lead in Watson concert fundraising
As part of an innovative fundraising effort called “Doctors for Doc,” Haywood County physicians affiliated with Haywood Regional Medical Center are helping fund an upcoming concert featuring Grammy Award-winning musicians Doc Watson and David Holt.
The concert, put on by the Haywood County Arts Council, will be held at 7:30 p.m. April 8 at Lake Junaluska’s Stuart Auditorium. More than 30 physicians or physician practices have agreed to contribute approximately $9,500 to help defer the arts council’s costs.
“We have an interest in supporting the arts,” said Dr. Robin Matthews, chief of the medical staff at HRMC and an obstetrician/gynecologist at Haywood Women’s Medical Center in Clyde.
Matthews, who contributed to “Doctors for Doc,” said she was particularly interested in supporting the Arts Council’s Junior Appalachian Music program. The JAM program provides once-a-week, after-school classes where students learn how to play traditional, stringed instruments like the fiddle, banjo and guitar. JAM students will give a pre-concert show before the featured performance.
In support of “Doctors for Doc,” Haywood Regional Medical Center agreed to make a marketing investment in the community event and to build the awareness of physicians in Haywood County, according to Robin Tindall, HRMC Director of Corporate Communications and Foundation.
“We are very proud of how the physicians are taking the leadership role in philanthropy among professional groups in our community,” said David Rice, HRMC president.
As the concert date nears the arts council is now turning to the community for continued support.
“We greatly appreciate this significant support from our medical community, yet we still need additional community sponsors and ticket sales to cover the concert expenses,” said arts council director Kay Waldrop.
