MLK Day ‘Sole Hope’ in Sylva
In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a “Sole Hope” shoe-cutting party will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at the Church of Christ in Sylva.
Children in Uganda are susceptible to a parasite called jiggers laying eggs in their feet. This is very painful and can be debilitating. Shoes can make all the difference. The shoe pieces will be sent to workers in Uganda who will be paid fair wages to add recycled tires for soles to finish the shoes.
Bring an old pair of blue jeans or denim fabric and sharp scissors. Financial contributions as well as the following supplies (to help with parasite removal) are also gladly accepted: large safety pins, surgical gloves, cotton balls, medical tape, antibiotic cream, gauze, band aids, topical lidocaine and fun stickers for the children.
This project is sponsored by the Jackson County Youth Leadership Council. Open to the public.
