Nowhere to go but down on this guided hike

out hikeA nearly all-downhill hike will be held in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on Tuesday, July 16, with Friends of the Smokies hike leader and guide book author Danny Bernstein.

The guided 7.5-mile hike will start from Newfound Gap and follow the Appalachian Trail before descending on Kephart Prong, passing by lush vegetation and waterfalls. Hikers will leave their vehicles at the end of the trail and get a free lift from Rocky Top Tours shuttle service to the hike’s starting point at Newfound Gap.

It is part of the Friends of the Smokies “Classic Hikes of the Smokies” series, held the third Tuesday of the month. It celebrates the Friends’ support for the Smokies Trails Forever program, which pays for additional trail workers for the park. Cost is $10 for Friends’ members and $35 for non-members. Registration required.

At our inception 20 years ago, we chose to be different. Unlike other news organizations, we made the decision to provide in-depth, regional reporting free to anyone who wanted access to it. We don’t plan to change that model. Support from our readers will help us maintain and strengthen the editorial independence that is crucial to our mission to help make Western North Carolina a better place to call home. If you are able, please support The Smoky Mountain News.
