Studio 33 wins $10,000 start-up award from Haywood Chamber

Custom jewelry business Studio 33 and its owner Diannah Beauregard won the Haywood County Chamber of Commerce Business Start-up Competition and a $10,000 prize last week.

Studio 33 produces heirloom quality jewelry using high-end materials while working with regional jewelers.

“Part of what has led me here is the mission to enrich the world through art,” said Beauregard in her acceptance speech.

Beauregard plans on using the award to build an apprenticeship-training program as well as to provide the business increased capacity to produce and sell the locally made products. Along with the apprentice program, Studio 33’s first-year plans include increased tooling, display fixtures and branding for the gallery.

This year’s award was presented by Rep. Heath Shuler, D-Waynesville, who said small business is the backbone of Western North Carolina. Shuler, who is chairman of the Rural and Urban Entrepreneurship Subcommittee of the Small Business Committee, promised to bring the committee to the district for a meeting and hearing in August.

This Business Start-up Competition program was developed through the efforts of the Business and Community Development Committee of the Chamber. Each year, the Greater Haywood County Chamber of Commerce and its members sponsor this competition to encourage local business start-ups and job creation. Applicants submit a complete business plan and supporting documentation to be reviewed by a third-party committee. Individuals who demonstrate they are in the process of starting a new business within 12 months of the date of the award are eligible for up to $10,000 in cash. This year, 11 plans were submitted for review.

The luncheon at Maggie Valley Club was sponsored by Advantage West. The following organizations contributed to the award: First Citizens Bank, Progress Energy, Haywood Regional Medical Center, Haywood Vocational Opportunities, United Community Bank, Smoky Mountain Development Corp., Haywood Advancement Foundation, and BB&T.
