The Highlands Biological Foundation continues its Zahner Conservation Lecture Series, a long-running summer tradition that connects the community with leading voices in science, conservation and the natural world.
On Thursday, July 30, the series will feature Liz Hillard, senior wildlife biologist for the Appalachian region at Wildlands Network, presenting “Connecting Appalachia: Wildlife Connectivity, Corridors, and Road Crossings.”
As roads, development and other human activities increasingly fragment natural habitats, maintaining connections between wildlife populations has become a critical conservation challenge. In this engaging presentation, Hillard will explore efforts to understand and improve wildlife connectivity across the Appalachian region, from local road crossing projects to large scale corridor planning initiatives. Attendees will learn how wildlife crossing structures, habitat connectivity and landscape-scale conservation strategies can work together to reduce barriers to animal movement, improve road safety and support the long-term conservation of wildlife throughout the region.
