For individuals with celiac disease, currently the only treatment is strict avoidance of gluten. At your local Ingles Markets, you can find our brown shelf tags which can identify products that are gluten-free, but always double check by looking at the product packaging itself.
There may be various labels on food or language or terms used on packaging or in restaurants that can be a bit confusing if you are trying to purchase foods that are safe for someone with celiac disease. Here are some examples:
• Gluten-Reduced — Often you will see this on beer. Not safe for someone with celiac disease
• Gluten-Removed — This product could be safe for someone with celiac disease but check with the company to understand their testing process.
• Gluten-Free Friendly — Not sure what this means!
• Wheat-Free — this product may not be safe for someone with celiac disease since other grains like barley and rye also contain gluten.
• Produced in a facility that also produces wheat products — proceed with caution! Depends on their testing procedures.
• Produced on machinery also used for products with wheat — probably not safe.
What is safe for someone with celiac disease?
Look for products that are “Gluten-Free” or “Certified Gluten-Free”
