Great Smoky Mountains National Park is requesting tips from the public to aid in an ongoing investigation of 33ย blackย vulturesย (Coragypsย atratus) dumped on the Foothills Parkway.ย
Onย April 6ย atย approximately noon, Great Smoky Mountains National Park rangers reportedย a large number ofย dead birds along the side of the road on Foothills Parkway West.
Park wildlife rangers identified thatย 33ย blackย vultures had been dumped.
Blackย vultures are a federally protected species under theย Migratoryย Bird Treaty Act,ย and itย isย illegal to harm or kill them without a permit fromย the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.ย Dumping ofย anything in a national park is illegal.ย
Information from park visitors is oftenย helpfulย toย NPSย investigators.ย Contact the park ifย youย wereย in the area of the Foothills Parkwayย between Chilhowee and Wallandย on April 6, have dash camera video or photos, or if you have information that could help.ย You may choose to keep your identity private, but sharing information may be beneficial for NPS investigators.ย
