The Haywood Waterways Association and Haywood County Environmental Health Department will host a free septic system workshop from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 30 at the Haywood County Agricultural Service Center, located at 589 Raccoon Road in Waynesville.

The workshop will cover septic system maintenance, signs of system failure and available financial assistance for qualifying homeowners. Failing systems can contaminate soil, groundwater and nearby waterways.

Staff will offer tips to reduce excess water use, prevent costly repairs and maintain system performance. Light refreshments will be provided.

It is cheaper to maintain a septic system than pay for costly repairs. Also, people should remember to pump their septic tank frequently. A 1,000-gallon tank for a family of four should be pumped every three years.

Staff will be on hand to discuss everything there is to know about septic systems including what financial help may be available for homeowners who qualify. Light refreshments will be provided. The event is free and open to the public. RSVP to John Allar at 828.476.4667, ext. 1 or john@haywoodwaterways.org.
