To the Editor:

I am writing to offer a different perspective than the one presented in the recent letter, “The grift goes on for Donny & Co.”

While the author is quick to lean on tired, highly charged rhetoric like “Trump Derangement Syndrome” and labels like “manbaby,” these emotional insults do a disservice to the millions of everyday Americans who support Donald Trump and the political shift he represents.

To claim that millions of voters are supporting “war, racism, and greed” is not only a gross mischaracterization, but it also fundamentally ignores why people vote the way they do. Supporters of Trump are looking for a country with strong borders, economic stability and a government that puts the economic well-being of its own citizens first. Framing this as a “destruction of democracy” ignores the fact that democratic processes — namely, free and open elections — are precisely how these leaders are put into office.

Furthermore, blaming the fundamental structure of our republic, like the Electoral College, simply because a specific political outcome didn’t go your way is incredibly short-sighted. The founders explicitly designed the Electoral College to ensure that all states, including smaller and more rural regions, have a voice, preventing a few highly populated urban centers from dictating policy for the entire nation.

It is easy to wake up sick or angry about the current state of politics, but misrepresenting the motivations of your fellow citizens won’t bridge the divide. We need to focus on actual policies and results rather than relying on hyperbole and personal attacks.
