DEI’s intent is honorable

To the Editor:

An MD recently expressed opinion regarding Trump wanting DEI to die.

All his remarks are accurate and no one would disagree with them if in fact employers followed them. The doctor doesn’t seem to recognize that there are many racists in this country.

Some are in hiring roles. These folks sometimes just rule out certain people based on the color of their skin.

I’m sorry, but that is just a fact. DEI was an attempt to fix that and maybe doesn’t work perfectly but the intent was honorable and it should not be totally disregarded.

At our inception 20 years ago, we chose to be different. Unlike other news organizations, we made the decision to provide in-depth, regional reporting free to anyone who wanted access to it. We don’t plan to change that model. Support from our readers will help us maintain and strengthen the editorial independence that is crucial to our mission to help make Western North Carolina a better place to call home.
