Steven Sutton, a Republican candidate for Jackson County Commission District 1, will face Democrat Casey Walawender in November after defeating Anthony Sequoyah in the Primary Eleciton.

Sutton, with local roots and a focus on fiscal accountability, argued for better constituent responsiveness while criticizing the county’s growing budget.

Jackson County’s commission races unfolded against sustained debate over spending levels and the county’s direction. Over multiple budget cycles, the general fund rose significantly, driving higher property tax obligations and prompting disagreement about whether growth reflected unavoidable costs or expanding government. Incumbents pointed to inflation and service demands. Challengers questioned scale and pace.

Simultaneously, the vote to leave the Fontana Regional Library system deepened political fault lines. Supporters described the move as reclaiming oversight. Opponents warned of financial uncertainty and fractured partnerships. Together, tax burdens and the library split framed a broader conversation about accountability, priorities and public confidence in county leadership.

Todd Bryson, the Republican incumbent, decided not to run again this year.
