If you’re having digestive issues, the cause may not be what you think.  First, and most importantly,  if you are experiencing pain or discomfort, diarrhea or constipation lasting for several days, it is important to speak to your health care provider to rule out any serious health problems and to potentially be tested for celiac disease or other illnesses.

But also check to make sure any of these aren’t the culprit for your tummy troubles:

• taking probiotic and prebiotic supplements

• eating meal replacement bars or any products containing sugar alcohols (these would be listed in the ingredients).

• taking fiber supplements

• not drinking enough fluids

Related Items

• drinking multiple carbonated beverages per day

• eating cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cabbage as well as the allium family (onions and garlic)

• stress

• eating large meals, especially late at night shortly before bedtime

• fried foods

Bottom Line: It’s important to mention any difficulties with your digestion to your primary care provider. As we get older our digestive system can become a bit more particular and sensitive.  Often foods and beverages we were able to eat or drink without issues, now cause us some discomfort, so be aware of which ones can cause the most difficulties.
