Meetings set on updated flood risk data

Residents, business owners and community leaders of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and Swain County are invited to attend a pair of public open house meetings.

The Swain County open house will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, in the Community Room of the Swain County Administration Building in Bryson City. The EBCI open house will be held from 3-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, at the Yellowhill Community Building in Cherokee.

The purpose of the meetings is to review and discuss the most recent updates to local flood hazard and flood risk data. The open house will give participants the opportunity to: Review the results of the preliminary flood risk data. Learn how to submit appeals and comments on the revised studies. Ask questions about the updated flood studies and the National Flood Insurance Program.

Representatives from the North Carolina Floodplain Mapping Program will be on site to explain the preliminary map update process, answer questions about flood insurance and provide guidance on floodplain management.

The flood hazard data is accessible online at fris.nc.gov. Select the preliminary tab to view the preliminary data to determine whether your property is affected by this update.

These events are open to the public.
