The Waynesville Parks and Recreation Department will host expert fly-tying instructors from the Cataloochee Chapter of Trout Unlimited and conduct an “Introduction to Fly Tying” class on three evenings in February. Intended for first-time fly tyers wanting to learn the basics, the class will also appeal to crafters seeking a challenge, as well as to anglers looking to get some expert tips.
Classes will meet on Feb. 19, 24 and 26 from 6-8 p.m. in Classroom B of the Waynesville Recreation Center. On Feb. 19, Class 1 will cover the basic fly-tying tools, their uses and teach students how to tie streamers, bead head/weighted and unweighted flies. The featured streamer pattern students will tie and take home will be the legendary Wooly Bugger.
On Feb. 24, in Class 2, students will learn to tie nymphs, both bead head/weighted and unweighted. The featured nymph (stream invertebrate) patterns students will tie and take home will be a Bead Head Prince Nymph and a Walt’s Worm.
On Feb. 26, Class 3 will have students learn how to tie popular, effective local trout flies: The Mop fly and, time permitting, pink worm flies, as the “tie and take home” patterns.
Registration is required and can be made at the Waynesville Recreation Center.
Class size is limited to 15 students. A minimum of five students must be registered by Feb. 16 to conduct the class.
Students must register for all three classes. Class cost is $20, but it is free to members of Trout Unlimited (any chapter). Classes are open to ages 16 and older, although those under 18 should come with a registered adult. All required equipment will be provided.
