Who has the moxie to challenge Trump?

To the Editor:

Viktor Orban, oppressive dictator and former Hungarian Prime Minister, made one colossal mistake — he allowed an election to take place. Ergo, he was tossed from office in a landslide.

Our own president (a thirsting wannabe dictator himself) knows he faces a similar fate, possible impeachment, conviction and imprisonment if he loses control of Congress.

To get what he so desperately wants, to render obsolete the pillars of democracy, the "checks and balances" of constitutional government (including freedom of the press), to violate and disregard the Constitution, he must somehow nullify the November elections.

Trump is the only president in American history fundamentally incapable of serious governance and who seeks to divide rather than unite our nation.

With one political party clearly unwilling to hold him accountable and the other visibly incapable of doing so, Trump is able to fling ugly insults and threaten anyone who dares challenge him. He operates indiscriminately and haphazardly, lacking any discernible code of ethics, law, order or honor.

The Supreme Court (by granting Trump virtual immunity from crimes committed while in office) gives Trump no reason not to believe he can do whatever he wants, that he is above the law. Absent human morals and instincts and void of any impulse to follow our nation's fundamental standards and guiding principles, we have unwittingly created a facsimile of Frankenstein's monster.

From the Trump-led attack on the United States Capitol, January 6, 2021, to state gerrymandering, to the "Save America Act," to the FBI seizing voting records, to demanding states turn over voter rolls to Homeland Security, this president has done more than any American (living or dead) to subvert and undermine confidence in our election system.

In this crisis (call it America's moment of truth), Congress (both parties) has proven itself essentially impotent. The Democratic Party appears feckless and the Republicans are ever-ready and eager to cover their eyes, shield their ears and bite their tongues to avoid Trump's wrath. And despite the murder of innocent civilians on the streets of their own cities, the veteran community (though many individuals are vocal) collectively remains silent.

Trump's ace in the hole is ICE. This masked, very loyal goon squad seems virtually unaccountable, hard to identify and (apparently) licensed to kill.

The last best hope to preserve our Republic is for Congress to find the spine to impeach and remove this president from office. He has committed numerous impeachable offences: violations of the Constitution, violations of U.S. and international laws, abuses of power and abuses of pardon power and obstructions of Congress and of justice, to name a few.

If the mid-term elections are held in November, squarely and fairly, Trump will lose and everyone else will win. Here's the riddle. Am I willing to place my body in the line of fire between two allied political parties, neither of which has, up to this time, had the moxie to stand up against one malignant narcissist and convicted felon?
