Trump demeans Dignified Transfer
To the Editor:
During the first Dignified Transfer of six fallen soldiers, I was stunned to see Trump wearing a baseball cap. He sells these online for $55, proceeds going to himself. You may have done a double take, as I did. Was Trump actually defying protocol and showing such disrespect to these grieving families?
He was. The whole world saw it and then moved on. But we should not move on. This was not an insignificant little faux pas. Someone surely informed Trump about proper protocol at a Dignified Transfer, but he chose to wear his baseball cap anyway. No one stopped him.
All of us, including Trump supporters, can no longer look the other way or find it amusing when Trump behaves in crude, inappropriate or childish ways. Examples are numerous, but several that stand out are when he belittled a female reporter with “quiet piggy” and called Haitian immigrants “garbage.” This week when asked if he had any remarks about Gov. Newsom having dyslexia, Trump replied, “everything about him is dumb,” referring to the governor as “Newscum.”
Then, scraping the bottom of the barrel for words, Trump released comments concerning the death of Robert Mueller. “Good. I’m glad he’s dead,” is how the commander-in-chief noted the passing of a twice decorated Vietnam War veteran and former FBI Director. Every American, regardless of party affiliation, should be shocked and angered by these remarks.
So, here’s the question … would you let your five-year-old say such things? Or your preacher? Or a school superintendent? And yet we allow the president of the United States do so.

How many more times will we simply watch as Trump behaves with gross disrespect or cringe at his crude, hurtful language we would never let a child use? Our silence enables him to test the limits of what he can get away with, like any five-year-old will do.
But, if you think Trump’s unethical behavior should be reined in, then contact our senators Thom Tillis and Ted Budd and demand they start a motion to censure Trump for undignified conduct. We can’t pretend we don’t see it any longer — or worse, that it doesn’t matter.
