The president deserves an ‘F’
To the Editor:
Recently, President Trump said, “I don’t know how a person of faith can vote for a Democrat,” at the National Prayer Breakfast. This may surely make the Top 10 of his ridiculous statements. Likewise, if anyone stated they didn’t know how a person of faith could vote for a Republican or Independent, they too would be equally ridiculous. I must add that such an unbelievable statement coming from a sitting president is far from the expectation we should have for one in the highest office of the land.
I do not know where the president received his biblical and theological studies — maybe Trump University — but I don’t believe he was listening during sessions on theological ethics and biblical practices. I had the opportunity to serve as an adjunct professor at Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta. If one of my students had made a similar statement on a major term paper, they would have received an “F,” which I never gave any young seminarian. The “F” would have been deserved because they had no concept of truth or logic.
I would be so bold as to freely say the same about our president. To be the primary speaker at the National Prayer Breakfast and to interpret a person of faith by their choice of political party is juvenile and embarrassing. Such a lack of intellect and understanding of faith at a gathering where prayer is the emphasis adds another dimension of embarrassment to the President and unfortunately our wonderful country. Shame on him for making such a horrible and insensitive statement. Even he should know better — one would hope!
P.S. Please allow me to once again state that those of us who rally at the Highlands Post Office are local residents and we have never been paid. Those who say differently are not telling the truth, regardless of their profession.
