Letters to the Editor

Disgusted that voters were duped

To the Editor:

I sent this letter via email to our congressmen, Rep. Chuck Edwards and Sens. Ted Budd and Thom Tillis.

In Bryson City, I'm preparing to vote in the Primary. We’re a poor county; most of the property is national forest and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Candidates for local offices are telling us how they plan to fund our outdated, worn-out infrastructure. There’s not enough sewer or water service for a new middle school, new housing or new business structures.

We depend on tourism for a major portion of our income, and the service jobs to support tourism aren’t high paying. Our teachers are among the lowest paid in the state. Yet our unemployment rate is only 3%. We're hard working. Our county is living on a shoestring budget.

So when I see that there are tax breaks for the wealthy and all the money that Trump is making off being president, basically off U.S. taxpayers, and how many rich pay no taxes, I'm disgusted. “We the people” deserve better.

According to the RAND corporation, $50 trillion moved from the bottom 90% of us to the top 1% between 1975 and 2020.

Yes, I’m disgusted. I’m ashamed that the local voters got duped by bully Trump into thinking he would pay any attention to “We the people.” I'm disgusted that you (our elected representatives) don’t stand up to Trump and to the special interests.

In close please read about and listen to the candidates — and VOTE.
