Casey Walawender will advance to November with a decisive win over three other Democratic candidates for Jackson County Commission's District 1.
The campaign revolved around two dominant flashpoints: escalating county spending and the fallout from the library withdrawal. In recent budget cycles, Jackson County’s general fund had climbed significantly, leading to higher property tax bills and sharper scrutiny from voters. County leaders attributed the increases to inflation, personnel costs and expanded responsibilities. Critics argued growth in government had accelerated too quickly.
At the same time, the decision to separate from the Fontana Regional Library system magnified ideological and financial tensions. Backers said the move restored local control. Opponents warned it risked higher long-term costs and deeper civic division. Together, those disputes framed a broader argument about fiscal priorities and public trust.
Walawender will face Republican Steven Sutton, who won his Primary, in November. Todd Bryson, the incumbent Republican, decided not to run again this cycle.
